Hopwood Hall Further Education Award

Eleven special awards were bestowed to selected staff and students at the Hopwood Hall Further Education Awards at Middleton Arena on Thursday (14 June). Director Matthew Taylor and Vice Principal Julia Heap led the evening, follwed by an inspiring speech from guest Eric Bishyika, an award-winning 21-year-old entrepreneur, who set up a clothing business at just 13 years of age, using money saved up from a paper round.

Fashion To The Market

At his clothes stall, Oasis Academy pupil Eric Bishyika, sold three T-shirts within minutes of opening. Eric is even in the process of setting up his own charity to give other youngsters the funding they need to become entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneur Eric scoops award

College student Eric Bishyika has been rewarded for his entrepreneurial efforts. The 17-year-old, from Hollinwood, was presented with a Jamaica Society Young Achiever’s Recognition Award in Entrepreneurship at the Jamaica Independence Dinner and Dance. The awards for young people of African or Caribbean descent aim to recognise minority talent and contributions made in the local community.

Students honoured at Making Business

Eric Bishyika, who started SW Clothing at the age of thirteen, came third. He summarised what it means not just to him, but all of the finalists, to be involved with the Making Business Happen awards: “It’s a breathtaking experience. The whole journey [from applying to the ceremony] and everything we’ve seen is like nothing we’ve seen. It’s genuinely a life-changing experience to see so many inspiring young people in one room, it gives us all ideas and makes us think even further into the future

Young Entrepreneur launches Brand at

An enterprising teenager is fashioning a bright future for himself with his own clothing business. Eric Bishyika, 16, launched Swagginstein Wear after a school project and has now been accepted on to the Peter Jones Enterprise Course. The Oasis Academy Oldham pupil started selling his own clothing range when he was 13 with money saved from his paper round.
